Inherent complexity: Why UK-EU relations cannot flourish?

Audrey Kerlaud, November 2, 2021.

Social Sciences – International Relations

Context: On the morning of June 24th, 2016, the United Kingdom (UK) shocked the world by voting to leave the European Union, the result of a 51.9% to 48.1% victory, marking a turning point in the relationship between the UK and the European Union. However, it was not the first time that the British citizens were asked for their view about the country’s relationship with the European Union. The EU has been a controversial subject matter in UK politics. The topic of UK-EU relations has brought forth both positive and negative arguments and movements and has proven to be a fertile ground for gaining votes. Brexit had raised a set of important questions such as: Was the UK destined to leave the EU? Can the UK stay united after Brexit? Based on the analysis of political discourses and secondary information, such as the lectures of Professor Vernon Bogdanor at Gresham College before the Brexit referendum, this article argues that the UK was destined to leave the EU. This essay contributes to the efforts of understanding the ways in which the EU poses serious challenges to the political establishments of the UK, and vice versa.
